About Hank Aaron
Hank Aaron broke into pro ball with the Negro American League's Indianapolis Clowns in 1951, batting cross-handed until Braves minor-league manager Ben Geraghty corrected his grip. Purchased by the Braves for $10,000, he debuted with Milwaukee on April 13, 1954, and spent 21 seasons with the franchise, through its move to Atlanta, before closing his career with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1975-76. A right fielder and three-time Gold Glove winner, Aaron won the NL MVP and a World Series title in 1957, and took NL batting crowns in 1956 and 1959 -- the .355 season, backed by a league-best 400 total bases, behind his 1960 base card. He made a record 25 All-Star teams and still holds career marks for RBI (2,297), extra-base hits, and total bases. On April 8, 1974, he passed Babe Ruth as baseball's all-time home run leader, finishing with 755. Milwaukee's publicity office began calling him "Hank" instead of "Henry" early in his career to soften his quiet public image, and the name stuck alongside "Hammerin' Hank." Aaron entered the Hall of Fame in 1982 on the first ballot. His short-printed 1960 Sport Magazine All-Star card (#566) is a scarce companion to the #300 base issue.
