The players on this card
Card #458 gathers the four coaches who staffed Al Lopez's White Sox in 1960, fresh off the club's 1959 American League pennant. Johnny Cooney, a 20-year National League veteran outfielder-pitcher who once managed the Boston Braves for 46 games in 1949, served as Lopez's bench coach from 1957 through 1964. Don Gutteridge, the second baseman on the pennant-winning 1944 St. Louis Browns, ran the infield and worked the first-base coaching box; he later managed the White Sox himself in 1969-70. Tony Cuccinello, a three-time All-Star third baseman who missed the 1945 AL batting title by .000087, coached third base -- the job he held during the controversial Game 2 relay of the 1959 World Series. Ray Berres, a light-hitting catcher turned renowned pitching coach, ran the staff from 1949 to 1966, shaping arms like Early Wynn and Bob Shaw during the pennant run. Together the four gave Lopez one of baseball's most stable coaching staffs.
