Fred Hutchinson's 1959–60 Reds staff blended three baseball lifers. Cuban-born Reggie Otero, a first baseman with more than a decade in the Cuban League and the U.S. minors, got a brief big-league look with the 1945 Cubs (14 games, .391) before managing the Havana Sugar Kings; he joined Cincinnati's bench in 1959 and stayed through 1965. Ellis “Cot” Deal, nicknamed for his cotton-colored hair, pitched for the Red Sox and Cardinals around a chronically sore arm; Hutchinson pulled him off the Rochester Red Wings' bench in August 1959 to run the Reds' pitching staff, swapping places with outgoing coach Clyde King. Wally Moses, a two-time All-Star right fielder who batted .320 with 208 hits for Philadelphia in 1937 across a 17-year playing career, served as Cincinnati's hitting instructor and first-base coach in 1959-60, one stop in a coaching run that later took him to the Yankees and Tigers.
