The players on this card
Card #457 is one of the 1960 set's stand-alone team-coaches cards, a one-year-only Topps subset, pairing three Cubs lieutenants. Charlie Root, the winningest pitcher in franchise history at 201 victories and forever tied to Babe Ruth's 1932 "called shot," was back as pitching coach after helping Milwaukee win the 1957 World Series as a coach. Lou Klein, an infielder on the 1943 pennant-winning Cardinals whose 1946 jump to the Mexican League drew a five-year ban later reduced, opened 1960 on the Cubs' bench before swapping jobs midseason with minor-league manager Grady Hatton. Catcher Elvin "El" Tappe, a weak-hitting backup since 1954, was in his second year as a Cubs coach; his idea that offseason for a rotating staff of "head coaches" became Philip Wrigley's College of Coaches in 1961, with Klein and Tappe both later taking turns running the club.
