The players on this card
Boston's 1960 coaching staff blended a Hall of Famer, a feared 1950s ace, and two Tigers-bred lifers. Del Baker, a Detroit backup catcher from 1914-16, later managed the Tigers to the 1940 AL pennant and was renowned as a sign-stealer; as a Red Sox coach he briefly took over as manager in June 1960, going 2-5 between Billy Jurges' firing and Pinky Higgins' return. Billy Herman, a 10-time All-Star second baseman who hit .304 over 15 seasons with the Cubs, Dodgers, Braves and Pirates, coached third base; the Veterans Committee inducted him into the Hall of Fame in 1975. Sal Maglie, "The Barber," the intimidating right-hander who won 23 games for the 1951 Giants and started opposite Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series, arrived as pitching coach for the 1960 season. Rudy York, a seven-time All-Star who broke Babe Ruth's home run pace in August 1937 and powered Detroit's 1945 champions and Boston's 1946 pennant winners, served as hitting coach.
