About Dick Stuart
Richard Lee Stuart signed with the Pirates out of Sequoia High School in Redwood City, California, in 1951, then set a Western League record with 66 home runs for Lincoln in 1956 climbing through the farm system. He debuted July 10, 1958, homering in the ninth inning of his first game, and seized the everyday first-base job in 1959. His 1960 Topps card #402 — printed with either a white or gray back in the scarcer late-series stock, white being tougher to find — catches him with the pennant-winning Pirates in the season that ended with their World Series upset of the Yankees; Stuart stood on deck as a pinch-hitter when Bill Mazeroski's Game Seven homer won it. His best season came in 1961: a .301 average, 35 home runs, 117 RBIs, and both All-Star teams. Traded to Boston for 1963, he led the American League with 118 RBIs and earned his defining nickname, "Dr. Strangeglove," coined by a Red Sox teammate riffing on the new Peter Sellers film — a nod to defense so porous he led his league in first-base errors seven straight years. He closed out in 1969 with the Angels after two seasons in Japan, finishing with 228 home runs.
