About Hal Woodeshick
Harold Joseph Woodeshick broke into the majors with the Detroit Tigers in 1956, then passed through Cleveland before joining the original Washington Senators — the club pictured on his 1960 Topps card No. 454, his last season there before that franchise moved to Minnesota and became the Twins. Selected by the expansion Washington Senators in the 1960 draft, the tall left-hander didn't find his footing until Houston made him the Colt .45s' first true closer in 1963, when a 1.97 ERA and ten saves briefly put him in the same Cy Young conversation as Dick Radatz and Ron Perranoski. He made the 1963 All-Star team, striking out Harmon Killebrew and Bob Allison, and led the National League with 23 saves in 1964. Nicknamed "The Switchman" for his knack of "turning out the lights" on hitters, he closed his career in Game Six of the 1967 World Series with the champion Cardinals, retiring Carl Yastrzemski's fielder's choice for the final out. He died in 2009 at 76.
