About Jerry Walker
Jerry Walker's 1960 Topps card, #540, is a short-printed high number from the set's scarcer late series (#507-572), catching him in his fourth and final season with Baltimore before an April 1961 trade sent him to Kansas City. A right-hander out of Byng High School in Ada, Oklahoma, Walker signed with the Orioles as a $60,000 bonus baby in June 1957 and debuted in the majors days later without ever pitching in the minors, part of Baltimore's "Kiddie Korps" of young arms alongside Milt Pappas, Steve Barber, Chuck Estrada and Jack Fisher. In 1959, at 20, he became the youngest pitcher ever to start an All-Star Game, working three innings for the win in Los Angeles, then that September threw a 16-inning, 178-pitch shutout over the pennant-bound Chicago White Sox. Traded to Cleveland in 1963, he preserved Early Wynn's 300th victory with four scoreless relief innings before his career, and throwing arm, gave out at 26. He later spent decades as a scout and executive, running Detroit's front office in 1993 and building St. Louis's player-personnel department into the 2000s.
