1960 Topps #541 Tony Curry

About Tony Curry
Tony Curry, born George Anthony Curry in Nassau, Bahamas, on December 22, 1937, grew up playing cricket and soccer before U.S. Navy sailors stationed nearby introduced him to baseball at fifteen. Following boyhood friend André Rodgers into pro ball, he signed with the Phillies in 1957 and tore through the minors, leading the Class A Eastern League in runs and hits while earning MVP honors in 1959. Force-fed onto Philadelphia's last-place roster for 1960, the left-handed-hitting outfielder opened eyes fast, sitting second in the National League batting race in mid-May at a .388 peak and belting his first two major-league homers off Cincinnati's Jay Hook in the same game. He cooled to finish at .261 with six homers and 34 RBI in 95 games, earning Topps All-Star Rookie honors reflected on his short-printed high-number 1960 Topps rookie card. A 1961 contract dispute ended his Phillies career; he resurfaced briefly with Cleveland in 1966, then went home to lead the Bahamas Baseball Association.
