Cards #375-440 were printed on two back stocks, white and gray. White is the scarcer of the two, and the difference is the tint of the cardboard on the reverse — it is a stock variation, not a design change, so both backs read identically.
About Smoky Burgess
Forrest Harrill "Smoky" Burgess broke in with the Chicago Cubs in 1949, hit .368 for the Phillies in 1954, and homered three times against Pittsburgh in a 1955 Reds game, before a January 1959 trade sent him to the Pirates with Don Hoak and Harvey Haddix. The stocky left-handed catcher — pictured on his 1960 Topps #393 in a Pittsburgh uniform, issued on both white and gray stock in the scarcer high-number Series 5 run — was Pittsburgh's backstop when Haddix threw 12 perfect innings before losing in the 13th on May 26, 1959, then hit .294 and batted .333 as Pittsburgh upset the Yankees in the 1960 World Series. A six-time All-Star who appeared in nine All-Star Games, he twice led NL catchers in fielding percentage as a Pirate. Nicknamed "Smoky" since boyhood — credited to the nearby Smoky Mountains, his father's own nickname, his lack of speed, or simply that he never smoked — Burgess retired with what was then the major-league record for career pinch-hits, 144. He was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds and North Carolina Sports Halls of Fame, and Caroleen unveiled a statue of him in 2024.
