Cards #375-440 were printed on two back stocks, white and gray. White is the scarcer of the two, and the difference is the tint of the cardboard on the reverse — it is a stock variation, not a design change, so both backs read identically.
About Tex Clevenger
Truman Eugene "Tex" Clevenger spent five of his eight big-league seasons with the Washington Senators, the club shown on this 1960 card. The Visalia, California native signed with the Red Sox for $3,000 in 1953 after twice no-hitting College of the Pacific for Fresno State, then debuted with Boston in 1954. The nickname had nothing to do with Texas — teammate Johnny Pesky tagged him "Tex" for his resemblance to former Red Sox pitcher Tex Hughson. Sent to Washington in a nine-player trade after the 1955 season, Clevenger became the Senators' workhorse reliever, leading the American League with 55 appearances in 1958 and making a career-high 11 starts in 1960. Card #392 fell on Topps' scarce high-number Series 5, printed on white or gray stock — the white-back version is the tougher find. Selected by the expansion Angels that December, he was flipped to the Yankees in 1961 and won back-to-back World Series rings, finishing his career 36-37 with 361 strikeouts.
