About Ted Abernathy
Ted Abernathy broke into pro ball in 1952 with the Washington Senators, signing out of Stanley, North Carolina, after Chick Suggs scouted him in high school. A torn shoulder muscle as a freshman had already forced him from an overhand motion to sidearm; years later, recovering from elbow surgery, he dropped his arm angle even further into a submarine delivery copied from Senators teammate Dick Hyde. His 1960 Topps card, #334, pictures him with Washington in what proved his final season there — the Senators released him that May after just three innings pitched. Abernathy rebuilt his career in the minors and resurfaced with Cleveland in 1963, then emerged as one of baseball's top relievers, leading the National League in saves with the 1965 Cubs (31) and the 1967 Reds (28, with a 1.27 ERA), winning The Sporting News' NL Fireman of the Year award both years. He pitched until 1972, finishing with 148 saves in 681 games across seven clubs, an unlikely late-blooming submariner who turned a career-threatening injury into his signature weapon.
