1975 Topps #520 Amos Otis

About Amos Otis
Amos Otis broke into pro ball in 1965, drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the fifth round out of Williamson High School in Mobile, Alabama, the only player from that school ever to reach the majors. The Mets grabbed him in a 1966 minor-league draft, but after a rocky trial in New York, Kansas City GM Cedric Tallis sent Joe Foy to the Mets on December 3, 1969, landing Otis and pitcher Bob Johnson, a deal now ranked among the worst in Mets history. Moved straight to center field, Otis anchored the Royals for fourteen seasons, making five All-Star teams (1970-73, 1976) and winning three Gold Gloves (1971, 1973, 1974) while leading the AL in stolen bases with 52 in 1971 and twice topping the league in doubles. Known to teammates as A.O., he helped Kansas City win its first AL West title in 1976 and first pennant in 1980, batting .478 with three homers in that Series loss to Philadelphia. He finished with 193 home runs, 341 steals and 2,020 hits, and was inducted into the Kansas City Royals Hall of Fame in 1986. This 1975 Topps #520 catches him mid-career, five years before that pennant run.
