About Jim Todd
Jim Todd broke in with the Chicago Cubs on April 29, 1974, going 4-2 with three saves as a rookie reliever and spot starter, striking out Houston's Dave Roberts for his first big-league strikeout and later singling off future Hall of Famer Steve Carlton for his only career hit. Card #519 captures that rookie season, though the Cubs traded him to Oakland that April for cash and Champ Summers, to be named later. Todd delivered a career year in 1975, going 8-3 with a 2.29 ERA and 12 saves as the Athletics' No. 2 closer behind Rollie Fingers, helping Oakland win the AL West and drawing five AL MVP votes; he pitched in all three games of that fall's ALCS as Boston swept the A's. He stayed in Oakland's bullpen through 1976, returned to the Cubs in 1977, moved to Seattle in 1978, and closed his career with Oakland in 1979. Over six seasons he went 25-23 with 194 strikeouts. A Lancaster, Pennsylvania native, Todd died in 2025 at 77.
