About Dick Pole
Dick Pole broke in with the Red Sox on August 3, 1973, after a dominant final minor-league season — a 2.03 ERA that led the International League and a seven-inning no-hitter for Triple-A Pawtucket. The 6-foot-3 Michigan native, one of the few big leaguers from the Upper Peninsula, spent four years shuttling between Boston's rotation and bullpen. A line drive off the bat of Tony Muser fractured his jaw and cost him most of the sight in his right eye on June 30, 1975, yet Pole returned to appear in that fall's World Series, walking two batters in Game 5 of the classic seven-game loss to Cincinnati. Seattle took him with the seventh pick of the 1976 expansion draft; his signature moment there was serving up Reggie Jackson's 300th home run in 1977. Pole finished 25-37 with a 5.05 ERA, then spent parts of three decades as a big-league pitching coach, mentoring a young Greg Maddux with the Cubs.
