About Jose Cruz

José Cruz Dilán, called "Cheo," signed with the St. Louis Cardinals out of Arroyo High School in Puerto Rico in 1966 and debuted in the majors on September 19, 1970. After four uneven seasons in St. Louis — including 1973, when he shared an outfield with brothers Tommy and Héctor Cruz — he was sold to the Houston Astros in October 1974, a trade that transformed his career. Cruz became the Astros' left fielder for 13 seasons (1975–1987), hitting .300 or better six times despite the pitcher-friendly Astrodome, and led the National League in hits in 1983. A two-time All-Star (1980, 1985) and two-time Silver Slugger winner (1983–84), he helped Houston reach its first postseason in 1980, batting .400 in the NLCS against Philadelphia. He retired as the franchise's career hits leader — a mark Craig Biggio later broke — and the Astros retired his No. 25 in 1992 and inducted him into their team Hall of Fame in 2019. This 1975 Topps card, #514, caught Cruz in his first full season in Houston, the start of a run that made him one of the most beloved players in franchise history.
