About Manny Sanguillen
Manuel De Jesus Sanguillén Magan, a Panamanian born in Colón on March 21, 1944, didn't pick up a baseball until he was nineteen — he favored basketball, soccer, and boxing as a kid before a church team led to his pro signing. He debuted with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1967, returned for good in 1969, and spent the next decade as their starting catcher, save for a 1977 season traded to Oakland for manager Chuck Tanner. A free-swinging "bad-ball" hitter who rarely walked, Sanguillén batted .296 lifetime — the fourth-highest mark by a post-WWII catcher — highlighted by a .325 average in 1970 and .319 in the Pirates' 1971 championship season, when he hit .379 in the World Series win over Baltimore. A three-time All-Star and strong-armed defender, he also caught Bob Moose's no-hitter in 1969, his proudest moment, and helped the Pirates win it all again in 1979. His 1975 Topps card, #515, catches him mid-decade with the Pirates, a club he'd help lead to five division titles in six years.
