About Don Hood
Don Hood, a left-hander out of Southside High School in Florence, South Carolina, was the Baltimore Orioles' first-round pick, 17th overall, in the 1969 draft after going 28-1 in high school. He climbed through Bluefield, Stockton, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Rochester before debuting on July 16, 1973, picking up the win in relief against Oakland. Blocked by a rotation anchored by Jim Palmer, Mike Cuellar, and Dave McNally, Hood pitched sparingly for Baltimore, his only postseason action a pinch-running appearance in the 1973 ALCS. The 1974 season brought tragedy: he witnessed Orioles prospect Mark Weems drown in Venezuela, then lost his own mother in a drowning accident that May. That winter Baltimore traded him, with Boog Powell, to Cleveland for catcher Dave Duncan, and Hood finally found steady work as an Indians swingman for four-plus seasons, posting a career-best 3.00 ERA in 1977. He later pitched for the Yankees, Cardinals, and Royals, closing a ten-year, 34-35 career in 1983. His 1975 Topps card, issued the winter he left Baltimore, is his last as an Oriole.
