About Gene Lamont

Gene Lamont's 1975 Topps card (#593) catches the Detroit backstop near the tail end of a playing career that would end up a footnote to what followed. A Tigers first-round pick in 1965 (13th overall, out of Hiawatha High School in Kirkland, Illinois), the left-handed-hitting catcher debuted on September 2, 1970, and belted a home run in his very first major-league at-bat, off Boston's Cal Koonce. He spent parts of five seasons in Detroit (1970-72, 1974-75), mostly as a backup behind the plate, closing his line at .233 with 4 home runs and 14 RBI in 87 games; his last appearance came May 24, 1975. Lamont's lasting legacy was built in the dugout: after managing in the Royals' and Pirates' farm systems and coaching under Jim Leyland in Pittsburgh, he piloted the Chicago White Sox to the 1993 AL West title and AL Manager of the Year honors, later managed the Pirates (1997-2000), and coached the Tigers for more than a decade (2006-2017).
