1975 Topps #537 Tommy Harper

About Tommy Harper
Tommy Harper broke into pro ball in 1960, signed by Cincinnati scout Bobby Mattick out of San Francisco State, and reached the majors with the Reds in 1962. A leadoff-hitting outfielder-infielder, he starred for Cincinnati (1962-67), Cleveland (1968), the Seattle Pilots/Milwaukee Brewers (1969-71) and the Boston Red Sox (1972-74) before finishing with the Angels, A's and Orioles. He led the majors with 73 stolen bases for the expansion 1969 Pilots - the most by an American Leaguer since Ty Cobb - and was the first player to bat for both the Pilots and the Brewers franchises. His 1970 season brought 31 homers and 38 steals, making him just the fifth player ever in the 30-30 Club, and earned him his lone All-Star nod and Brewers MVP honors. In 1973 with Boston he swiped a club-record 54 bases and was named team MVP. His 1975 Topps card, #537, catches him as a Red Sox after that stretch of two league stolen-base titles. He finished with 408 career steals.
