About Duffy Dyer

Don Robert "Duffy" Dyer got his nickname before he could talk: his mother, listening to the radio show Duffy's Tavern when labor began, asked "How's Duffy?" upon waking, and it stuck. A star at Arizona State, where he helped the Sun Devils win the 1965 College World Series alongside teammates Sal Bando and Rick Monday, Dyer was drafted by the Mets in 1966 and debuted with them in 1968. He caught for the "Miracle Mets" championship club in 1969, lofting a pinch-hit, three-run homer on Opening Day that made him a cult favorite at Shea Stadium. His best season came in 1972, when he set career highs with eight home runs and 36 RBIs while filling in for an injured Jerry Grote. Dealt to Pittsburgh for Gene Clines after the 1974 season, Dyer is shown on his 1975 Topps card (#538) backing up All-Star Manny Sanguillén; he caught John Candelaria's 1976 no-hitter and later coached and managed in the minors and majors for two more decades.
