About Jesse Jefferson

Jesse Jefferson's 1975 Topps card (#539) catches him in his final season as an Oriole, the club that drafted him out of George Washington Carver High School in Midlothian, Virginia, in 1968. After six seasons in Baltimore's farm system, the right-hander debuted on June 23, 1973, throwing a ten-inning complete game at Fenway Park; Rico Petrocelli's ninth-inning homer forced extra innings before Baltimore pushed across the winning run. That rookie season, 6-5 with a 4.11 ERA, proved his only winning record in the majors, as the Orioles rolled to the 1973 AL East title. Traded to the White Sox that June, Jefferson pitched for Toronto, Pittsburgh, and California through 1981, finishing 39-81 over nine seasons. He is best remembered as an original 1977 Blue Jay, still holding Toronto's franchise record for innings pitched (12) in a complete game, and for his 1-0, 11-inning win over Oakland's Mike Norris on May 16, 1980, the longest shutout duel between African-American pitchers in major league history. He died in 2011.
