About Chuck Stobbs
Chuck Stobbs, a lefty out of Norfolk, Virginia, signed with the Boston Red Sox in 1947 for a reported $50,000 bonus, one of the era's original "bonus babies" whose contract forced Boston to keep him on the major-league roster for two seasons rather than the minors. He debuted that September at 18, cracked the rotation by 1949 at 11-6, then moved to the White Sox in 1952 and to the Washington Senators in 1953, spending most of his career there. He's remembered for one pitch: in 1953 he served up Mickey Mantle's 565-foot home run out of Griffith Stadium, regarded as the first tape-measure shot of the live-ball era. Stobbs led the American League in losses in 1957 amid a 16-game losing streak, yet pitched 15 big-league seasons, finishing 107-130 with 897 strikeouts for the Red Sox, White Sox, Senators/Twins, and Cardinals. His 1960 Topps card, #432, catches him with Washington in the scarce high-number Series 5 run, issued in both white- and gray-back stock, the white scarcer.
