About Don Buddin
Don Buddin signed with the Red Sox as an estimated $50,000 bonus prospect out of Olanta, South Carolina and Wofford College, working his way up through Roanoke, Greensboro, and Louisville before winning Boston's Opening Day shortstop job in 1956. After a year of Army service in 1957, he held the position through 1961, drawing praise from manager Pinky Higgins but never escaping the boos -- he led American League shortstops in errors in both 1958 and 1959, and Fenway Park fans tagged him "Bootin' Buddin" for the miscues, with one writer suggesting his license plate read E-6. Buddin's best year came in 1961, a career-high .263 average, before Boston traded him to the expansion Houston Colt .45s for Eddie Bressoud. He started at shortstop in Houston's first-ever game and hit the franchise's first grand slam before finishing his six-year career with Detroit in 1962. His 1960 Topps card, #520, falls in the set's short-printed high-number series (#507-572), scarcer than the base run.
