1960 Topps #558 Eddie Mathews
Sport Magazine '60 All-Star Selection subset (#553-572), in the short-printed high-number series.

About this card
Cards #553-572 close the set as the Sport Magazine All-Star run, and they sit inside the scarce high-number series - which is why they are the hardest twenty cards in the set to finish.
About Eddie Mathews
Eddie Mathews signed with the Boston Braves for a $6,000 bonus in June 1949, hours after graduating Santa Barbara High School, and won the third-base job as a 20-year-old rookie in 1952. When the franchise moved to Milwaukee in 1953, he electrified the new city with 47 home runs and 135 RBIs, the first of two NL home run titles (1953, 1959), and the next year he appeared on the cover of the first-ever Sports Illustrated. A nine-time All-Star, Mathews hit a game-winning tenth-inning homer in Game Four of the 1957 World Series, then fielded the grounder that ended Game Seven as Milwaukee beat the Yankees for the franchise's only title there. The only man to play for the Braves in Boston, Milwaukee, and Atlanta, he and Hank Aaron combined for 863 home runs as teammates from 1954-1966, a record surpassing Ruth and Gehrig. Mathews joined the 500-homer club in 1967 with Houston and closed his 17-year career with Detroit's 1968 World Series champions, retiring with 512 home runs. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1978. This high-number #558 card, from the scarce Sport Magazine All-Star Selection subset, catches him at the peak of his Milwaukee prime.
