1960 Topps #440 Jim Lemon

Washington Senators · American League · Base set · Series 5 · Card #440 of 572
White / gray back

Cards #375-440 were printed on two back stocks, white and gray. White is the scarcer of the two, and the difference is the tint of the cardboard on the reverse — it is a stock variation, not a design change, so both backs read identically.

About Jim Lemon

James Robert Lemon signed with Cleveland in 1948 as organization filler — the Indians already had an ace named Bob Lemon, so the rangy Virginian took his middle name to keep the mail straight. Eight years, an Army hitch, and repeated minor-league demotions later, he finally won a permanent job with the Washington Senators in 1956 at age 28. The 6-foot-4 right fielder made it count fast: on August 31, 1956, he crushed three home runs off Whitey Ford at Griffith Stadium with President Eisenhower in the stands, becoming Ike's favorite ballplayer. Paired first with Roy Sievers and later Harmon Killebrew and Bob Allison, Lemon anchored the era's most feared Senators power tandems, peaking with 33 homers and 100 RBIs in 1959 and a career-high 38 in his 1960 All-Star season — the year pictured on card #440, printed with either a white or gray back as part of the scarcer Series 5 stock split. He finished with 164 homers over 12 seasons, later managed the 1968 expansion Senators, and was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 1988.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-08-20. Half grades fold down for both graders (8.5→8); PSA qualified slabs (OC, ST, PD, MC and the like) are not counted. Neither grader separates the white and gray back stocks on this card, so the counts below cover both. The Venezuelan issue, the 1960 Topps Tattoos and Bazooka are separate products and are not counted here.
