1960 Topps #439 Tom Brewer

Boston Red Sox · American League · Base set · Series 5 · Card #439 of 572
White / gray back

Cards #375-440 were printed on two back stocks, white and gray. White is the scarcer of the two, and the difference is the tint of the cardboard on the reverse — it is a stock variation, not a design change, so both backs read identically.

About Tom Brewer

Thomas Austin Brewer signed with the Red Sox out of Elon College in 1951, won 19 games in his only minor-league season with the Class D High Point-Thomasville Hi-Toms, then served two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean War before debuting for Boston in 1954. The Cheraw, South Carolina-raised right-hander earned the club's rookie-of-the-year honors that first year and reeled off seven straight seasons of double-digit wins. His best year came in 1956: an All-Star selection, a career-best 19-9 record, 15 complete games, four shutouts, and MVP votes, with manager Lou Boudreau comparing his all-around game to Bob Lemon's. Shoulder trouble limited him to ten outings in 1961, his last season; he finished 91-82 with a 4.00 ERA and 733 strikeouts, all as a Red Sox. His 1960 Topps card, #439, arrived during a rough 10-15 campaign and comes from the Series 5 printing, found with either gray or white card stock, the white notably scarcer. He later coached at Cheraw High School, where the ball field now bears his name.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-08-20. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Neither grader separates the white and gray back stocks on this card, so the counts below cover both. The Venezuelan issue, the 1960 Topps Tattoos and Bazooka are separate products and are not counted here.
