1960 Topps #438 Jim Coker

also known as Jimmie Coker
Philadelphia Phillies · National League · Base set · Series 5 · Card #438 of 572
Rookie CardWhite / gray back

Cards #375-440 were printed on two back stocks, white and gray. White is the scarcer of the two, and the difference is the tint of the cardboard on the reverse — it is a stock variation, not a design change, so both backs read identically.

About Jim Coker

Jimmie Goodwin Coker was born March 28, 1936, in Holly Hill, South Carolina, and starred in football and baseball at Furman University before a shoulder injury pushed him back to the diamond full time. The Phillies signed him for a $4,000 bonus in 1955, and he climbed the system as a power-hitting catcher, earning Texas League Rookie of the Year honors at Tulsa in 1957 and an International League All-Star nod on the pennant-winning 1959 Buffalo Bisons. He debuted with Philadelphia on September 11, 1958, singling off Johnny Podres in his first at-bat. Handed the starting job in 1960, Coker opened with a walk-off double and a grand slam, but a league-worst 55 stolen bases allowed and a .214 average buried the effort; Topps still named him catcher on its 1960 All-Rookie team. This #438 card, issued on scarcer white-back Series 5 stock, is his rookie. He played parts of nine seasons with the Phillies, Giants, and Reds, finishing a .231 hitter with 16 homers before retiring in 1968 to ranch in Throckmorton, Texas, where he died in 1991.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-08-20. Half grades fold down for both graders (8.5→8); PSA qualified slabs (OC, ST, PD, MC and the like) are not counted. Neither grader separates the white and gray back stocks on this card, so the counts below cover both. The Venezuelan issue, the 1960 Topps Tattoos and Bazooka are separate products and are not counted here.
