1960 Topps #492 Larry Jackson

About Larry Jackson
Larry Jackson broke into the St. Louis rotation in 1955 and spent eight years anchoring a Cardinals staff that churned through five managers, teaming with roommate Ken Boyer and Stan Musial as one of the club's few constants. A hard sinker, a slow curve learned from Carl Erskine, and a slider that became his signature carried him to five All-Star selections — 1957, 1958, twice in 1960, and 1963; in '57 he became the first Idaho native named an All-Star, prompting the state's governor to ship a sack of potatoes to every National Leaguer. Traded to the Cubs after the 1962 season, he keyed 1963's turnaround and, in 1964, led the National League with 24 wins for an eighth-place club, setting down the first 18 Reds he faced in a near-perfect game broken up by Pete Rose's seventh-inning single, and finished runner-up for the Cy Young Award. A 1966 trade sent him to Philadelphia, where he closed out a 194-183, 3.40 ERA career in 1968. Living up to his nickname, "Cocky," Jackson pitched with a bulldog's confidence even on bad clubs — his 1960 Topps card, #492, catches him mid-career in St. Louis flannels.
