About Leon Wagner
Leon "Daddy Wags" Wagner signed with the New York Giants organization in 1954 out of sandlot ball in Inkster, Michigan, and powered his way up through the low minors before debuting with the San Francisco Giants on June 22, 1958, batting .317 as a rookie left fielder. Card #383 catches him in transition: dealt to St. Louis after the 1959 season, he played a reserve role for the 1960 Cardinals, and his lone home run that year landed as the first ever hit at Candlestick Park. A high-number Series 5 issue, the card exists with both white and gray stock on the back, the white notably scarcer. Wagner's real breakout came after St. Louis moved him on to the expansion Los Angeles Angels, where he clubbed 91 homers in three seasons, made two All-Star teams, and was named MVP of the 1962 All-Star Game. He finished with 211 career home runs across 12 seasons and five franchises. The nickname grew from his distinctive left-handed batting stance and a sideline clothing venture he advertised as "Get your glad rags from Daddy Wags."
