Cards #375-440 were printed on two back stocks, white and gray. White is the scarcer of the two, and the difference is the tint of the cardboard on the reverse — it is a stock variation, not a design change, so both backs read identically.
About Don Cardwell
Don Cardwell broke into the majors with the Philadelphia Phillies on April 21, 1957, three years after signing with the club out of James A. Gray High School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He spent four seasons in Philadelphia's rotation before a four-player trade sent him to the Chicago Cubs in May 1960 — the deal pictured on his 1960 Topps card #384, which still shows him in a Phillies uniform. Two days after the trade, on May 15, 1960, Cardwell no-hit the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field — the first pitcher in major league history to no-hit in his first start with a new team. He won a career-high 15 games for the Cubs in 1961, then twice won 13 for the Pittsburgh Pirates before joining the "Miracle Mets" in 1967. As the senior member of New York's staff, he helped the Mets win the 1969 World Series, closing his 14-year career with the Atlanta Braves in 1970. Card #384, from Topps' scarce high-number Series 5, exists with white or gray backs, the white stock harder to find.
