1960 Topps #516 Marty Kutyna

About Marty Kutyna
Marion "Marty" Kutyna signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1953 and spent nearly seven years working through the minors — including a 14-10, 3.34 ERA season for the Portland Beavers — before a September call-up finally got him to Kansas City in 1959. He pitched his lone full big-league season for the Athletics in 1960, working almost exclusively in relief, and that year is preserved on his 1960 Topps card (#516), a short-printed high number (#507-572) and a recognized rookie card. Traded to the expansion Washington Senators for catcher Haywood Sullivan that December, Kutyna spent 1961-62 in Washington, finishing his four-year career 14-16 with a 3.88 ERA, 110 strikeouts and eight saves in 159 games. His debut came against Ted Williams, who needled him after a called walk went the hitter's way: "nice pitching, kid. They were all strikes." Kutyna's best-known keepsake, though, is the ball President Kennedy threw out on Opening Day 1962 in Washington — one the Hall of Fame has long tried, unsuccessfully, to pry loose from him.
