1960 Topps #515 Stan Lopata

About Stan Lopata
Stan Lopata signed with the Phillies out of Detroit's sandlots after serving with the Army's 14th Armored Division in Europe, where he earned the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. The right-handed-hitting catcher broke in with Philadelphia in 1948 and helped the 1950 "Whiz Kids" win the NL pennant, appearing in that fall's World Series. His career took off in 1954 when Rogers Hornsby advised him to "get a piece of the ball," prompting Lopata to sink into the exaggerated crouch that became his trademark and a tougher target for pitchers. He made back-to-back All-Star teams in 1955-56, and his 32 home runs in 1956 set a since-broken record for Phillies right-handed batters. Called "Big Stash" in the press and "Lop" by teammates, he was also the first NL catcher to wear glasses, adopting tinted lenses to cut scoreboard glare. Traded to Milwaukee in 1959, Lopata closed his career as a Braves backup; his short-printed high-number 1960 Topps card (#515, from the tough #507-572 series) captures that final big-league stop.
