About the players on this card

Ed Armbrister

Ed Armbrister was born July 4, 1948, in Nassau, the Bahamas, and signed with the Houston Astros as an amateur free agent before the 1967 season. After six years in the minors, he became part of the November 1971 blockbuster that sent him, Joe Morgan, Jack Billingham, Cesar Geronimo, and Denis Menke to Cincinnati for Lee May, Tommy Helms, and Jimmy Stewart, fueling the rise of the Big Red Machine. Armbrister debuted August 31, 1973, and spent five seasons as a reserve outfielder, batting .245 with 4 home runs in 224 games. He shares his 1975 Topps rookie card, number 622, one of the set's key rookie cards, with three other Rookie Outfielders. That October, Armbrister collided with Red Sox catcher Carlton Fisk on a Game 3 sacrifice-bunt attempt; the no-call on interference fueled a Reds rally to a 6-5, ten-inning win in a World Series Cincinnati went on to claim. He won a second ring in 1976 and was inducted into the Bahamas National Hall of Fame in 2008.

Fred Lynn

Fredric Michael Lynn broke into the majors on September 5, 1974, batting .419 over his first 15 games with Boston after starring on USC's College World Series champion teams (1971-73) and winning Pan American Games silver in 1971. His 1975 rookie season remains one of the greatest ever: a .331 average, 21 homers, 105 RBIs, and league-leading doubles, runs, and slugging, capped by a Gold Glove. Lynn became the first player to win Rookie of the Year and MVP in the same season, later matched only by Ichiro Suzuki in 2001, and he and fellow rookie Jim Rice, the "Gold Dust Twins," carried Boston to a seven-game World Series loss to Cincinnati. He added three more Gold Gloves, the 1979 AL batting title at .333, and nine straight All-Star nods, including MVP of the 1983 All-Star Game for the first grand slam in All-Star history. Traded to California in 1981, Lynn won 1982 ALCS MVP honors as the first player from a losing team so honored. His 1975 Topps card, #622, a four-player Rookie Outfielders issue, ranks among the set's key rookies. Never inducted at Cooperstown, Lynn entered the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2002 and the College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007.

Tom Poquette

Tom Poquette was Kansas City's fourth-round pick (80th overall) in the 1970 draft out of Eau Claire (Wisconsin) Memorial High School. He worked through the Royals' farm system, but back-to-back right knee surgeries in 1974 and January 1975 set him back just as Baseball Digest predicted he'd win a steady job - the same year Topps pictured him on card #622, a "Rookie Outfielders" foursome with Terry Whitfield (whose team line misprints "Ney York Yankees"), now a recognized key rookie card of the set. Healthy again, "Pokie," his nickname since high school, broke out in 1976, hitting .302 with 10 triples, earning Kansas City's Rookie of the Year honor and a spot on Topps' and Baseball Digest's Rookie All-Star teams. The left fielder platooned through three straight AL West title runs (1976-78) and once strung together 133 consecutive errorless games. Traded to Boston in 1979, he hit .331 down the stretch behind Yastrzemski and Rice before a shoulder injury and a brief stop with Texas ended his seven-year career in 1982. He stayed in the Royals' system for years afterward as a minor-league hitting coach and manager, twice earning league Manager of the Year honors.

Terry Whitfield

Terry Bertland Whitfield was a first-round pick of the New York Yankees, taken 19th overall in the 1971 draft out of Palo Verde High School in Blythe, California. The left-handed-hitting outfielder debuted with the Yankees on September 29, 1974, and appears on Topps' 1975 Rookie Outfielders card (#622), whose reverse carries a printing error reading "Ney York Yankees." After limited time in New York, he was traded to the San Francisco Giants, where from 1977 to 1980 he settled in as a regular, hitting near .290 each year. Whitfield then starred for Japan's Seibu Lions from 1981 to 1983, batting .316 with 22 home runs and 100 RBI in his first season and earning two Best Nine Awards (1981, 1983) along with a Pacific League All-Star nod. He closed his playing days back in the majors with the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1984 to 1986, finishing with a .281 career average over ten big-league seasons.
