About Clay Kirby
Clayton Laws Kirby Jr. was a hard-throwing right-hander out of Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, Virginia, drafted by the Cardinals in 1966 but claimed by the expansion San Diego Padres in October 1968. He debuted in 1969 and became San Diego's ace, going 15-13 with a 2.83 ERA in 1971. Kirby is remembered above all for July 21, 1970, when manager Preston Gomez pinch-hit for him after eight no-hit innings against the Mets, trailing 1-0; San Diego lost, and the Padres went 52 years without a no-hitter, a stretch fans still call the "Curse of Clay Kirby." Traded to Cincinnati in November 1973, Kirby helped anchor the Big Red Machine's rotation, going 12-9 in 1974 and 10-6 in 1975 as the Reds won the pennant and the World Series, though he did not appear in the Series. This 1975 Topps card catches him mid-uniform-change, dealt to Montreal that December for his final big-league season.
