1975 Topps #424 John Lowenstein

About John Lowenstein
John Lowenstein signed with Cleveland as an 18th-round pick out of UC Riverside in 1968 and reached the majors in September 1970, becoming a do-everything utility man who covered second, third, shortstop, and the outfield for the Indians through 1977 — the club shown on his 1975 Topps card, a season in which he hit .242. He stole a career-high 36 bases in 1974, split 1978 with Texas, then was claimed by Baltimore off waivers for $20,000. Platooned in left field with Gary Roenicke under Earl Weaver, Lowenstein hit a career-best .320 with 24 homers in 1982, delivered a pinch-hit, extra-inning walk-off homer to open the 1979 ALCS, and starred in Baltimore's 1983 championship run, robbing Bo Diaz of a home run in Game One and going deep himself in Game Two of the five-game series over Philadelphia. Known for a sharp, self-deprecating wit, he founded the "Lowenstein Apathy Club" in Cleveland; he retired in 1985 with 881 hits and 116 homers over 16 seasons, then spent a decade as an Orioles broadcaster.
