About Jim Northrup

James Thomas Northrup broke in with the Detroit Tigers in 1964, after being named the International League's Rookie of the Year at Syracuse, and spent eleven years patrolling all three outfield spots at Tiger Stadium. Known as "the Silver Fox" for hair that turned prematurely gray, he was a streaky, left-handed power hitter with a flair for the dramatic: in 1968 he hit five grand slams, including three in a single week across just 14 plate appearances, then delivered the signature moment of his career in Game 7 of the World Series, tripling over Curt Flood's head off Bob Gibson to drive in the go-ahead runs as Detroit beat St. Louis for the championship. Northrup topped .300 once, in 1973, and finished with 153 home runs and 610 RBIs over 12 seasons. Sold by Detroit to Montreal in August 1974, he was traded to Baltimore weeks later and closed out his career with the Orioles in 1975, the club pictured on what became his final Topps card, before retiring to Michigan.
