About Marty Perez
Martin Roman Perez Jr. was born February 28, 1946, in Visalia, California, and signed with the Los Angeles Angels as an amateur free agent in June 1964, out of Redwood High School. A glove-first shortstop, he led his league in double plays at Class AA El Paso (1968 Texas League champions) and Class AAA Hawaii (1969 PCL Southern Division champions) before debuting with the California Angels on September 9, 1969, as a late-season relief man for Jim Fregosi. Traded to Atlanta that October, Perez became the Braves' starting shortstop from 1971-73, helped the club set its all-time single-season double-play record in 1971, then moved to second base and led NL second basemen in fielding percentage in 1974 — the job he held when card #499 in the 1975 Topps set was issued. San Francisco acquired him in June 1976 in a trade that sent Darrell Evans to the Giants; Perez closed a ten-year, 931-game career with the Yankees and Oakland in 1977-78, batting .246 with 22 home runs and 241 RBIs.
