About Pepe Frias
Jesús María "Pepe" Frías Andújar signed with the San Francisco Giants in 1967, but his light bat brought three releases in three years — from the Giants, the Dodgers, and the Giants again — before the expansion Montreal Expos gave him a home at Double-A Jacksonville in 1970. He advanced through the Montreal system quickly enough to make the Expos' roster early in 1973, debuting April 6, and spent six seasons as Montreal's backup infielder; his 1975 Topps #496 card catches him in a lean year, just 51 games and a .125 average. Traded to Atlanta on March 1, 1979, Frías finally won an everyday shortstop job at 30, hitting .259 with 123 hits and his only career home run, a solo shot off John Candelaria. He finished his nine-year run (1973-1981) with Texas and Los Angeles, retiring with 323 hits and a .240 average over 724 games.
