About Tom McCraw
Tommy Lee McCraw broke into pro ball out of Santa Monica College and debuted with the Chicago White Sox on June 4, 1963. A left-handed-hitting first baseman and outfielder, he spent eight seasons in Chicago before moving through the Washington Senators and California Angels, closing his playing career with the Cleveland Indians in 1974-75 — the club pictured on this 1975 Topps base card. Over 13 major-league seasons he hit .246 with 75 home runs and 404 RBI in 1,468 games. He made the last out in Washington Senators history, caught stealing in the club's final game on September 30, 1971, and in 1973 became the first designated hitter in California Angels history. McCraw later built a long second career as a big-league batting coach, logging 24 seasons on major-league staffs with the Indians, Giants, Orioles, Mets, Astros, and Expos/Nationals, four of them under manager Frank Robinson.
