The players on this card
The trio pictured on this Phillies coaches card brought decades of baseball experience to Connie Mack Stadium in 1960. Ken Silvestri, a switch-hitting catcher who broke in with the 1939 White Sox and later caught for the Yankees, joined the Phillies in 1949 and was part of their 1950 pennant-winning "Whiz Kids," where a sportswriter dubbed him the "operating head of the bullpen" for mentoring young pitchers; he returned in 1959-60 as Philadelphia's bullpen coach. Dick Carter, a Philadelphia-born pitcher and outfielder who had managed in the Phillies' farm system since the late 1940s - his 1956 Schenectady Blue Jays won the Eastern League title - coached third base in 1959-60 before resigning that May due to poor health. Andy Cohen, the former New York Giants second baseman, coached the '60 club and even managed one game between Eddie Sawyer's resignation and Gene Mauch's arrival, guiding Philadelphia to a 10-inning win over Milwaukee for a perfect 1-0 managerial record.
