The players on this card
Card #468, from Topps' 1960 coaches subset, groups four members of manager Solly Hemus's St. Louis staff. Johnny Keane, a St. Louis native who never played in the majors, spent 17 seasons managing in the Cardinals' farm system before joining the big-league staff as a coach in 1959; he became manager in July 1961 and led St. Louis to the 1964 World Series title. Howie Pollet, a three-time All-Star left-hander who twice led the NL in ERA for the Cardinals in the 1940s, returned as pitching coach in 1959 and stayed through that 1964 title. Ray Katt, a catcher who won a 1954 World Series ring with the Giants, served as Cardinals bullpen coach into June 1960. Harry Walker — "Harry the Hat," nicknamed for constantly fidgeting with his cap between pitches — was the 1947 NL batting champion, a two-time World Series winner as a player, and St. Louis's 1955 manager before rejoining as a coach in 1959. The staff helped the Cardinals improve to 86-68 in 1960.
