About Chris Speier

Chris Speier's 1975 Topps card (#505) catches him in a San Francisco Giants uniform during his first tour with the club, the stretch in which the Alameda, California native anchored shortstop for three straight National League All-Star teams from 1972 to 1974. San Francisco made him the second overall pick in the 1970 draft after a Detroit-area scout spotted him playing summer ball for Ontario's Stratford Hoods while he was still at UC Santa Barbara. Speier won the starting job at age 20 and played 19 big-league seasons at shortstop for the Giants, Montreal Expos, St. Louis Cardinals, Minnesota Twins and Chicago Cubs, finishing with a .246 average, 112 home runs and a .970 fielding percentage built on the strong, accurate arm that earned him the nickname "the Alameda Rifle." He hit for the cycle twice a decade apart, with the 1978 Expos and the 1988 Giants, and won the 1987 Willie Mac Award during his second San Francisco stint. Speier later spent two more decades coaching in the majors, earning a World Series ring with the 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks.
