1975 Topps #506 Leron Lee

About Leron Lee
Leron Lee was the St. Louis Cardinals' first-round pick (7th overall) in the June 1966 draft out of Grant Union High School in Sacramento, turning down 36 football scholarship offers to sign. He debuted with St. Louis in 1969, then moved through San Diego (1971-73) before Cleveland purchased him in 1974, the team pictured on card #506. His signature MLB moment came as a Padre on July 4, 1972, singling off Tom Seaver with one out in the ninth to break up a no-hitter. He signed with the Dodgers as a free agent in 1975, left the majors after 1976 with a .250 average over eight seasons, and moved on to Japan's Lotte Orions. There he blossomed into a star, leading the Pacific League in homers and RBI as a rookie, winning the 1980 batting title, making four NPB All-Star teams, and earning four Best Nine awards across eleven seasons (1977-87). He held NPB's career batting-average record until Norichika Aoki passed him in 2018, and his 1978 move to bring younger brother Leon to Lotte formed one of Japanese baseball's most feared cleanup duos. Lee later coached for the 1989 World Series champion Oakland Athletics.
