1975 Topps #507 Tom Carroll

About Tom Carroll
Thomas Michael Carroll, a 6-foot-3 right-hander from Oriskany, New York, signed with the Cincinnati Reds after they took him in the sixth round of the 1970 draft out of North Allegheny High School near Pittsburgh. He rocketed through the minors as the club's top pitching prospect, no-hitting Omaha for Triple-A Indianapolis in 1974 before his July 7 call-up, where he outdueled fellow debutant Bob Forsch with two-hit ball against St. Louis. Card #507 in the 1975 Topps set is his rookie card, issued after he went 4-3 with a 3.68 ERA that first summer. Recalled again in 1975 when ace Don Gullett broke his thumb, Carroll won his first two starts and beat Andy Messersmith and the Dodgers 1-0 in front of 52,015 fans — his final major league victory. Though arm trouble ended his career at 8-4 after two seasons, his teammates voted him a three-quarter share of the Big Red Machine's 1975 World Series check.
