About Glenn Beckert

Glenn Beckert broke in with the Chicago Cubs in 1965, taking over second base after the tragic death of Ken Hubbs and holding the job for nine seasons alongside shortstop Don Kessinger and third baseman Ron Santo. A contact-first hitter who rarely struck out, Beckert made four straight All-Star teams (1969-72), won the 1968 National League Gold Glove Award at second base — ending Bill Mazeroski's five-year run — and led the league in runs scored that same year. His signature season came in 1971, when he hit a career-high .342 to finish third in the NL batting race behind Joe Torre and Ralph Garr. Teammates nicknamed him "Bruno," after pro wrestler Bruno Sammartino, for the aggressive way he ran down popups near second base. Traded to the San Diego Padres after the 1973 season, Beckert closed out his career there, appearing on card #484 of the 1975 Topps set before his release in May 1975. He finished with 1,473 hits and a .283 average over 11 seasons, and is a member of the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame.
