About Tom Dettore
Thomas Anthony Dettore Jr., a 6-foot-4 right-hander from Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates three times out of Canon-McMillan High School and Juniata College before signing in 1968. He debuted for Pittsburgh on June 11, 1973, then moved to the Chicago Cubs for 1974-76, the seasons pictured on his 1975 Topps card (#469), his recognized rookie card. Working mostly in relief, Dettore made a career-high 36 appearances for the 1975 Cubs, going 5-4, and once threw 13 consecutive starts without allowing a home run. His signature moment came at Wrigley Field in April 1976, when he surrendered one of the longest home runs on record, an estimated 530-to-600-foot shot by Dave Kingman, in what proved to be his final big-league season; he finished 8-11 with a 5.21 ERA over four years. Dettore later pitched in Italy's Serie A1 alongside Lenny Randle, appeared in a 1984 60 Minutes segment on Italian baseball, and spent decades as a minor league pitching coach for the Pirates and Mariners organizations.
