1975 Topps #468 Bobby Mitchell

About Bobby Mitchell
Robert Vance Mitchell signed with the Red Sox as a free agent in 1965, was claimed by the Yankees in the 1968 Rule 5 Draft, and debuted in New York in July 1970. That June he was traded with Frank Tepedino to Milwaukee for Danny Walton, and after a scorching, injury-shortened .381/.459/.722 season at Triple-A Evansville in 1972, he stuck with the Brewers for good in July 1973. Mitchell split time in left field and at designated hitter through 1975, sharing outfield duty with Hank Aaron, Gorman Thomas and Sixto Lezcano and posting an OPS+ over 100 in both 1974 and 1975 — the stretch pictured on card #468 in the 1975 Topps set. Manager Del Crandall valued his power-speed combination, but a managerial change sent Mitchell to Japan in 1976. There he thrived with the Nippon-Ham Fighters, leading the Pacific League with 36 home runs and making the All-Star team in 1978 before retiring after 1979 with 113 NPB homers.
