About Jim Greengrass

James Raymond Greengrass (1927-2019) was a right-handed, power-hitting outfielder signed out of Addison, New York, by the New York Yankees in 1944 at age 16, though nearly seven years in the minors, a failed pitching trial, and military service delayed his big-league arrival. He reached the majors with the Cincinnati Reds/Redlegs in September 1952, batting .309 in a 17-game cameo, then broke out as a near-Rookie of the Year in 1953, starting almost every game in left field with 20 home runs and 100 RBI (one of three Redlegs to reach the century mark) and finishing sixth in the NL voting. In 1954 he set a career high with 27 home runs and drove in 95, and on Opening Day, April 13, 1954, he stroked four doubles to tie Pop Dillon's record for the most two-baggers in a season opener. Traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in April 1955, he was slowed by phlebitis and hit just .205 in 1956, his final season, which is the campaign this fourth-series high-number card documents. Over five seasons (1952-1956) he batted .269 with 482 hits, 69 home runs, and 282 RBI in 504 games.
